Boracay news

Writer: Vladimir RypacekVladimir Rypacek

Boracay is probably the most famous and most visited place in the Philippines. It is famous for its 3km long beautiful beach, beautiful sea and everything that goes with it. It is popular lately especially among Koreans who come here by the thousands. Unfortunately, this brings with it problems - hotels, bars and the infrastructure couldn't cope (especially the sewage system). In February 2018, President Duterte visited the island and when he stood on the beach, saw the state of the surroundings and smelled the stench of sewage from the sea, he uncompromisingly ordered the island closed for six months and completely cleaned up - hats off to him, I can't imagine any other country getting away with this. Moreover, Duterte is famous for (sometimes very harshly) stamping out the corruption that pervades Asian countries, and the Philippines was no exception. As a result, they started rebuilding, making real sewers, and eliminating all buildings encroaching on the 30 meter zone around the beach (including luxury hotels).
